Nose - Rhinoplasty

It is one of the most difficult and challenging of cosmetic surgery procedures. Often, the difference between a good and a bad result is measured in millimeters, thus leaving very little margin for error. Rhinoplasty requires an accurate sense of harmony, combined with a thorough knowledge of anatomy and surgical technique. The nose occupies a central position in the face, constituting an aesthetic unity and at the same time, closely related to other facial structures.

When analyzing a patient for aesthetic nasal surgery, it is important to have knowledge of the anatomy and function of the nose. In some cases, an assessment of an otolaryngologist can be required to achieve aesthetic and functional correction in one procedure.

>> FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What about Rhinoplasty scars?
Some noses allow the scars to be hidden inside the nasal cavity. In these cases, there is no apparent scarring. In other cases, however, there is little visible external scars, as consequent incisions (cuts) are made in the columella and the nasal wings. In these cases, it is the placement of these external scars (barely visible) that provides a better result for the final shape or even the nasal physiology.

Can I choose my future nose the way I want?
No. There is an aesthetic balance between the nose and face, this balance the surgeon must observe in order to preserve the naturalness and authenticity of the face. Each case is studied in detail to give the nose the best possible look within the requirements of the face. If your choice coincides with that type of nose planned, no doubt, your wish will be fulfilled. Surgeon and patient must be in agreement with the possible suggested results Computerized images have been established as a useful aid in rhinoplasty, allowing the simulation of nasal alterations, which allows the patient to view the results of surgery designed before the surgery, also allowing the patient to take an active role in determining the aesthetic goals and which surgical outcomes are possible.

Is the final outcome regarding the form and function immediate?
No, There are several phases of post operation of the nose. In the 1st phase (after cast removal, around the 7th day), although several aesthetic defects of the original nose are corrected, an edema (swelling) can be noticed that will decrease and tends to normalize around the 6th month. There are patients who reach the final result just before, as well as others just after this period. The persistence swelling for a period longer than the usual, generally does not interfere with the outcome.

How will my breathing be after surgery?
Rhinoplasty is also intended, if possible, to improve the patients breathing if it is poor with the original nose. However there is some difficulty in breathing following the operation (few weeks), this is due to the fact that swelling also exist inside the nose. The movement of the "respiratory valve" can also be damaged during this period by changing the elasticity of the wings. After some time this tends to normalize. Respiratory problems may be linked to the septum, and in some cases can be corrected in the same surgery. When the correction of the septum demands special care, rhinoplasty should be a second option, after having corrected the septum.

I suffer from a constant runny nose. Can cosmetic surgery relieve me of this suffering? The practice shows that, in some cases, chronic symptoms that were bothering the patient for years could be minimized or even disappears after rinoplasty. This, however, can not be promised in all cases. The important thing is to clarify that the respiratory functions will be preserved after rhinoplasty.

For how long will the result last?
The result of a rhinoplasty lasts for a long time. After a few years, as in any part of the body, some morphological changes may happen in the nasal region.

Is rhinoplasty surgery considered "small" or "average"? And what are the complications? Rhinoplasty rarely causes serious complications. However, being a surgical procedure occasionally unforeseen developments may occur. Fortunately, any such contingencies are likely to be corrected by surgical revisions. Possible "unforeseen circumstances" should not be confused with the intermediate phase of healing, until it reaches its final form. Your surgeon, who will inform you about it without any embarrassment, can answer any doubts about a possible postoperative complication.

What type of anesthesia is used for the operation?
Both the general and local anesthesia are used. The surgeon and patient decide the most appropriate criteria in each case.

How long is the surgery?
It varies, depending on the surgical planning, and can last up to 4 or 5 hours. However, the time of surgery should not be confused with length of stay of patients in the Surgical Center, for this also involves the preparation period of anesthesia and postoperative recovery. Your doctor will inform you about the total time.

What is the length of stay?
It can vary from half day up to 1 day of hospitalization. Everything depends on the type of anesthesia used and patient recovery postoperation. Your doctor will determine the length of stay, always keeping in mind your comfort and safety.
What dressings are used? How many?
With a fracture procedure the nose is kept immobilized for about 7-8 days. In some cases a nose splint it is used that may be left for 24-72 hours. If repair of the septum is performed simultaneously, this time may be longer, with exchange of dressings.

I heard that nose "bleeding" is very common, is that true?
There is a little bleeding, which is normal in the first 48 hours. This, however, should not be cause for concern. A protective dressing superimposed on the aperture of the nose is purposely kept in order to slow the bleeding. This additional dressing can be changed at home as often as necessary.

Is there pain in the postoperative period?
Rarely. Post operation proves quite comfortable. When experiencing any pain, this is easily countered with painkillers that will be prescribed.

Is there any danger in this operation? Rarely does rhinoplasty surgery cause serious complications. This is a result of properly preparing each patient for surgery, and considerations of the desirability of performing this surgery.

In what position should I sleep in the early days?
Always with your head slightly elevated in bed (use of a pillow). Keep the face-up whenever possible.

When can be exposed to the sun?
Usually after the 3rd postoperative day, there is no harm in being exposed to any sunlight on the street. If the face has bruises (those spots features of blood infiltration) you should use sun screen SPF 30 on the face, avoiding sun exposure daily. However, for long exposures (beaches, sunbathing), it is advisable to wait a minimum of 30 to 45 days.

What is the postoperative course? Do not forget that, until it reaches the desired result, several phases are characteristic of this type of surgery. Edema (swelling), "spots" of blood infiltration, respiratory distress in the early days, are common to all patients, of course, some exhibit these symptoms with less intensity than others. We hope you are in this group. If not, do not worry. Give your body time to take charge of resolving all the little problems. Clearly, any concern on your part should be communicated to your plastic surgeon. Generally, there is a period of euphoria, as soon as you remove the plaster or the immobilizer (day 7). In rare cases, mild anxiety arises, due to some transient edema and bloodstains. This is temporary and usually reflects the desire to achieve the final result as soon as possible. Be patient. Remember that any outcome of cosmetic surgery of the nose should be evaluated after 6 months.

Is the result of cosmetic surgery of the nose worth it?
Of course. Rhinoplasty gives great satisfaction. Remember what was said earlier, every case is considered individually in the first consultation, during which he explained all the details are reported here as well as those who, by mistake, have not been mentioned. If the doctor and patient decide on surgery, it is because the result is worth it. Otherwise, do not proceed with operation.
