SURGERIES ¬

Face - Face Lift or Rhytidectomy

Years ago, when facial rejuvenation surgery was first defined; it was only in the detachment and traction of the skin, correcting sagging and lessening wrinkles. Although this procedure had beneficial results, it could lead to artificial results because it resulted in stretched skin and a younger look in the face but aging design and contours. For example, the jowls, the bags at the edge of the chin (Bulldog bags) remain, etc.

However this initial stage of facial surgery has changed over the last twenty years. Adding to the pulling of the skin, the modeling of facial aspects by gentle liposuction of the face, and in some cases the ability to transform the facial muscles. With this came a change in concept, because it was not enough just to stretch the skin and reduce wrinkles. It was necessary that the contour of the face was consistent with the new younger look of the skin. And liposculpture of the face was the new tool that allowed us to achieve this goal.

Facial surgery, as with all these procedures, happens with an incision starting at the base of hair (chop), or slightly above, and within the temporal region of the scalp, down the front of the ear following its contour, bypassing the ear lobe, climbing behind the ear following the angle formed between the ear and skull, and then moving another 3 or 4 centimeters horizontally on the scalp.

Interestingly, the abundant blood flow to the face leaves little to no signs of scaring, even one in front of the ears.

Injection of fat aspirated from the very face or another part of the body, is designed to fill voids and depressions that arise with aging (ex. sulcus naso-genianos, cheekbones that are empty and lose their freshness and the naso-jugal groove beside the nose, we call the valley of tears). However, injections of fat in face are generally absorbed over time, which is why plastic surgery is always seeking new materials as fillers.

Facial surgery requires a hospital stay of 24 hours, after it is clear the patient has no curative discharge.

The most frequent complication of this procedure is bruising that occurs with successful treatment, which doesn’t cause a lot of problems, but can lead to a slower recovery.

The immediate recovery happens within a week, freeing up the patient for almost all activities after 14 days and complete freedom, including exposure to the sun and sports after 45 days.

>> FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

HOW MANY YEARS YOUNGER WILL I LOOK? It is not possible, through surgery, to make a face look 20 years younger. Although this surgery is aimed to rejuvenate it, it is impossible to determine the final look.

WHAT WILL THE SCARS BE LIKE? Facial plastic surgery improves the appearance of sagging, wrinkles, furrows, etc, thereby rejuvenating the face. The scars are permanent and will change with time. Cosmetic resources such as makeup and hairstyles can suitably disguise the inconvenience created by recent scars. Each patient reacts differently in relation to the development of the scars, and may even in some cases become unnoticeable. Some patients may have a tendency for unsightly scarring (hypertrophic and keloid scarring). This possibility should be assessed during the initial consultation as well as their family history. Light-skinned people tend to develop less of this type of scar. There are several medical and surgical means of improving such unsightly scars, at the appropriate time, not to be confused, however, with the natural evolution of the middle period of healing. Any questions about scar development should be clarified after the surgery.

WANT TO FIX HYPERTROPHIC SCARS? There are several medical and surgical means of improving such unsightly scars in the appropriate time. A complicated scar should not be confused with the "middle period" of normal healing (the 30th day until the 12th month). Any questions about its development should be clarified with your doctor.
HOW LONG DOES THE RESULT? Facial Surgery visually slows the aging process of these areas, but cannot stop the "evolutionary process of the body." And in some cases, there is no need for add-ons, after a short period of time.

HOW RISKY IS THIS SURGERY? Every medical act includes an amount of risk and Plastic Surgery, as part of medicine is no exception. You can minimize the risk by adequately preparing each patient, but not eliminate it completely.

ARE PRE AND POSTOPERATIVE PHOTOS IMPORTANT? The best way to evaluate the result is by comparing the photographs before and after surgery, taken with similar photographic aspects in these two periods. The photographs of the patients are an integral part of your medical record.

WHAT TYPE OF ANESTHESIA IS USED FOR THIS OPERATION? General or epidural anesthesia, even local anesthesia under sedation can be used in special cases. HOW LONG IS THE SURGERY? In case the of a complete surgery, involving the face, eyelids and neck, the surgery may last four hours or more, depending on the case. However, the time of surgery should not be confused with length of stay of patients in the Surgical Center, for this also involves the preparation period of anesthesia and post-operative recovery.

HOW LONG DO I STAY IN HOSPITAL? Normally 24 hours.
ARE DERSSINGS USED? Yes dressings are commonly used. The first dressing remains for the first 24 hours, after which you may opt for a new dressing over the whole area or only on the residual scars after this period.

WHEN CAN I TAKE A FULL BATH? Usually the second or third day, or after removal of dressings, assisted by a trained member of the team.

ARE YOUR EYES CLOSED POST-OPPERATION? Not necessarily. It may be recommended to apply gauze or cotton soaked in saline solution or in cold water on the eyes, which can be changed periodically, several times a day.

WILL I FEEL PAIN POST-OPPERATION? Occasionally pain may occur, which can be controlled with common analgesics.

WHEN ARE STITCHES REMOVED? Those of the eyelids can be removed on the 3rd or 4th day, the remaining scars (face, neck, scalp), between seven and twelve days.
WHEN CAN MAKEUP BE USED? It is up to each surgeon to provide more details about this, but if all goes well, within one week.

WHEN CAN THE HAIR BE WASHED AND COMBED? Between the second and seventh post-operation day you may wash and comb your hair (with caution). To dry them you can use a slightly warm hair dryer.

IS THE "HAIRCUT" PREPARATION FOR SURGERY VERY EXTENSIVE? The hair when cut, is only the area of the incisions, so post-operation this drawback can be masked with the appropriate hairstyle.

WHAT IS THE DEVELOPMENT OF POST-OPPERATION? Until we can achieve the desired result, several things are typical with this type of surgery. For example, edema (swelling), "spots" of blood infiltration, hypersensitivity in some areas, insensitivity in others, are common to all patients, of course, some patients show these symptoms with greater or lesser intensity than others. Your body can easily resolve these little problems. Any concern on your part must be communicated to the surgeon who will provide any necessary explanations for its remedy. A short period of "emotional depression" may occur in the early days, due to some transient, and usually comes from anxiety to reach the final result as soon as possible." Have patience. Remember that any outcome of facial surgery rejuvenation can only be evaluated at least 3 to 6 months post-operation.
